Kaiser Network 25 February 2004,
announced the publication of two new studies published in the January/February
issue of the Allan Guttmacher Institute's (AGI) journal Perspectives on
Sexual and Reproductive Health. The reports discuss the high incidence of
sexually transmitted infections (STI's) amongst young people in the USA
in 2000; and the associated costs of treating the infections. In the first study, researchers from World Health Organisation (WHO), Family Health International (FHI) and Centre for Diseases and Control (CDC) - STD Prevention Division - found that about 18.9 million new STD cases occurred in 2000. 9.1 million of the cases, or roughly 50 per cent, occurred among people between the ages of 15 and 24. Researchers also found that human papillomavirus, trichomoniasis and chlamydia accounted for 88 per cent of all new STI cases in that age group. The Washington Times, 25 February 2004, reported that the second study estimated that the direct cost associated with the 9.1 million STI cases among the 15 to 24 year-old age group was $6.5 billion in year 2000. According to Perspectives on Sexual and Reproductive Health, the researchers found that HIV and HPV had the highest estimated direct medical costs at $5.9 billion, accounting for 90 per cent of the total cost. The Washington Times recorded that researchers also found that incurable viral STI's, including genital herpes, HIV, hepatitis B and HPV accounted for 94 per cent of the total costs, while non-viral curable infections, including chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis and trichomoniasis, accounted for 6 per cent of the total costs. Fox Network and Reuters reported Sharon Camp, AGI President and CEO Sharon Camp as saying: "[It is] not surprising that young people account for a disproportionate share of STI cases...Most young people are sexually active, and many are ill equipped to prevent STI's or seek testing and treatment.Although abstaining from sexual activity is guaranteed to prevent STI's, some adolescents and virtually all young adults will eventually choose to have sex. Before they do, they need realistic sex education that teaches them how to prevent STIs and unwanted pregnancies." Washington Times 25/Feb/04, Perspectives on Sexual Health Jan/Feb 2004, Fox Network, Reuters 25/Feb/04 reported in Kaiser Network 25/Feb/04. Отметим, что в РФ национальная система учёта ЗППП существует очень давно. |
